he Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has destroyed a large quantity of substandard products confiscated from shops in and around Opera Square in Accra as part of ongoing efforts to rid the Ghanaian market of unsafe goods.
Speaking during the exercise, the Greater Accra Regional Head of the GSA, Clement Kubati, highlighted the dangers posed by substandard electrical products.
He explained that such items can cause electric shocks, fires, and other hazards in homes and workplaces, endangering lives and property.
Mr. Kubati said the Authority remains committed to protecting consumers through intensified market surveillance and enforcement operations. He added that similar exercises will be carried out in other regions to ensure only approved and quality products are available on the market.
He also advised importers to submit samples of their goods to the GSA for testing and certification before importing in bulk. According to him, this would help prevent the seizure and destruction of non-compliant products, saving importers from financial losses.
The destruction exercise forms part of the GSA’s broader mandate to uphold standards, safeguard public safety, and promote consumer confidence in products sold across the country.
